News in Gutsy

Posted by thio4linux on October 21, 2007

This is my second day in Gutsy and we’re talkin about the best operative system have ever done (almost for me :-P).

The difference between the last version (Feisty) aren’t a lot but everyone is very useful.  Now the administration by root is easier and faster with the menu of Dolphin and also you open a terminal wherever you want into a dolphin window.

Compiz is included in the official repo so a lot of compatibility and settings problem are solve.

The possibility of customization are more than in Feisty version (take for example a look of the panel bar menu).

Download Gutsy!!!!!!!!!!!

Gutsy Partitions – file fstab

Posted by thio4linux on October 20, 2007

how to install Gutsy in a better way…

i think that the best way to install Gutsy is to create 3 partitions on your hd: the first for the Root, the second for the home e and the last for a store, that you can intend like a storage in which you can save your songs, film or whatever you want.

When you install Gutsy you have to choose how to split your storage area (at the point 4 of 6 of the installation). Choose the manual partitioning and then:

if you have already installed on your pc a Windows system, this must be put in the first part of the hd because win doesn’t start if it isn’t there. The second area you have to create is a Root and swap areas. According to me a good way to divide your hd is giving 10GB for the root area and for the swap choose 1,5 * your RAM memory (for example: 1 GB of ram -> 1.5GB swap) and put it into the last partition.

Then you have to create the /home partition and the store area: in the end you must obtain something like this (take a look of the mount point):

1- Win

2- Root ——> mount point: /

3- Store ——> mount point: /dev/sdaX (substitute X with a number that isn’t already in use for the other mount point).

4- Home —–> mp: /home

5- Swap —–> mp: —

The extension for the first 4 area is ext3 and logical. For the swap select swap from the menu (and then you can’t select a mp).

Then you control that everything is ok lookin’ at the fstab file in /etc/fstab. This is my fstab:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon – Alternate or Desktop?

Posted by thio4linux on October 18, 2007

finally the new Ubuntu but….. which version???

this is the day of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, the new linux desktop environment. Yuo can choose beetween two version: Desktop and alternate. The same operating system but different way to install and configure it.

The first difference is that the Desktop version is a live cd version, so you can try your new OS without install it. For this reason this version requires at least 256 MB of RAM memory, necessary to include all the OS.

The other one istea, the Alternate, doesn’t implement this functionality and so requires only 192 MB of RAM. If you have an old or low-spec computer, using a lightweight desktop system such as Xubuntu is recommended, as it should make more efficient use of your system’s resources.
If you choose the Alternate version while you are installing the system you have to set manually some file like xorg.conf so you have to know carefully your system and linux…….

How to connect 2 linux pc with a sharing connection

you should have 2 network interfaces:
– one directly connected to internet (i use ppp0 in this tutorial)
– and the other for the connection of the 2 pc (i use ethernet eth0)

on the pc connected to internet (the “server”):
sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo sh -c “echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward”

and then look at the resolv.conf file: gedit /etc/resolv.conf

on the other pc (“client”):
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.100.x (substitute x with a number from 2 to 255)

Compiz+Java: NO PROBLEM!

Posted by thio4linux on October 11, 2007

the real way to solve the problem of compiz with java!

i think that there’s a lot of people with my problem… i’ve found the solution:

open this file:

sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

insert on the bottom of the file but before exit 0 this line:

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

now you must have something like this:

#!/bin/sh -e
# rc.local
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will “exit 0″ on success or any other
# value on error.
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
# By default this script does nothing.

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

exit 0

then restart your distro…….

if you still have some problems type in your terminal: export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit before opening your java apps………… that’s all folks!!! have fun 😉
